New Signal Operational at SR 141 and Majors Road in Forsyth County
July 28: A new traffic signal at State Route (SR) 141 and Majors Road will become operational this afternoon, weather permitting. The new signal is part of the SR 141 widening project underway in the area.
Each intersection is reviewed to determine if the intersection meets the Federal guidelines for the installation of a traffic signal based on the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The intersection of State Route 141 and Majors Road met those requirements.
“Please slow down through the area and use extra caution until you get familiar with the new signal location. Remember to watch out for other drivers until they get used to the new signal, too. Typically five rear-end crashes occur in the first year after a signal is installed because it is new and people aren’t expecting to have to stop,” GDOT District Traffic Engineer Brent Cook said. GDOT and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will monitor the area to ensure drivers are following the new traffic signal.
Crews are finishing the installation of the base on the new southbound lanes of SR 141 from Brookwood Road to Deer Lake/Granite Lane. Weather permitting, pavers are scheduled to start overnight asphalt work today. Once paving is completed, traffic will be shifted to the “new southbound” lanes of SR 141 while the original lanes are reconstructed. The grade of the existing lanes of SR 141 must be lowered by approximately six feet to create better sight distance for motorists.
This 6.5-mile long construction project is 88% complete. Weather permitting, CW Matthews Contracting, Inc. plans to have SR 141 widened to four lanes and open to traffic by November 1, 2010. The official project completion date is December 31, 2010. CW Matthews Contracting, Inc. is the prime contractor on this 6.5-mile long project.
GDOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather.
