    McGinnis Ferry Road Reconstruction

Georgia DOT has begun construction on McGinnis Ferry Road from Sargent Road to the Chattahoochee River. The project, which will impact 5 miles of roadway, was originally scheduled to be complete July 31, 2010. The current scheduled completion date is April 30, 2011.

    Project Overview

    • McGinnis Ferry Road will be widened from two lanes to four lanes, doubling current traffic capacity in the area.
    • Construction includes sidewalks and a raised median, contributing to improved safety and traffic flow.
    • The project scope includes utility work, such as the relocation of 36 large transmission poles.

    Impact on Travel

    • During construction, lane closures are necessary for safety purposes and will be in place at night from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. during the week and on weekends.
    • Traffic delays are to be expected. Please allow additional travel time and/or choose alternate routes during this construction project. There will be no construction during major holidays or in inclement weather.

    Motorists’ Safety

Georgia DOT is dedicated to providing safe conditions for both motorists and workers on our roadways. PLEASE slow down and drive carefully through the work zone!

    McGinnis Ferry Road Widening

    1.       A grading crew is working on the east end of the project from just west of the Shakerag Trace subdivision entrance to the Forsyth County Soccer Fields. Grading operations include excavating cut material to place in fills for the new westbound lanes. A crew is placing stone in this area, preparing for a concrete crew to start placing curb and gutter during the week of August 9. The second grading crew is working at the intersection of McGinnis Ferry Road and Old Atlanta Road. All of this work will allow the contractor to construct the new westbound lanes and prepare for the next traffic shift.

    2.  There will also be paving at the intersection of Old Atlanta Road and McGinnis Ferry Road and the intersection of Johns Creek Parkway (east) and McGinnis Ferry Road.

    3.  The contractor's second concrete crew continues to place sidewalk throughout the project. Sidewalk is being placed at various locations on the project.

    4.  The signal contractor is continuing to work on the new signal installations at various locations on the project.

    5.  The contractor's asphalt paving crew is scheduled to pave the areas noted in #1 from August 16 to August 20. The paving hours will be from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. This is a noisy operation. Keep in mind this is also a moving operation. If you hear the noise outside your subdivision or home, remember it will not be there too long as the crew moves the operation down the roadway. We also have asked the trucking companies to be mindful of the work hours and try to keep the noise to a minimum.

    6.  The contractor is planning another traffic shift at the end of August. The shift will start just west of the Chattahoochee River and continue to Johns Creek Parkway (east). Traffic will be shifted onto the new westbound lanes.

    7.  The only long-range milestone at this time is the traffic shift scheduled for the end of August as noted in #4.

    8.  Remember schedules and plans are subject to change.

The scheduled completion date for this project is April 30, 2011.

McGinnis Ferry Bridge over the Chattahoochee

All work on the bridge is occurring in the river - nothing you can see by driving through. Work is progressing well in the river. Crews are planning to pour the first footing for the new bridge at the end of July, weather permitting. Currently, no work is happening on top of the bridge.

The scheduled completion date for this project is April 30, 2012.
